Kirin Free was, when it launched in Japan in 2009, the world's first beer-taste beverage with a certified 0.00% alcohol content — not a trace, rather than the "less than 0.5%" that many non-alcoholic beers carry. The recipe uses barley malt and hops just as a standard beer would, but without yeast, which means the fermentation process that produces alcohol never takes place. The result is a beer-taste drink with genuine malt and hop character — a pale, golden colour, a clean malt aroma, moderate bitterness, and a refreshing finish — that reads as a beer on the palate without any of the slightly artificial or sweet quality that can affect non-fermented alternatives. It quickly became Japan's most popular non-alcoholic beer-taste drink, used by drivers, those avoiding alcohol for health or personal reasons, and anyone who wants the experience of a cold beer without the alcohol. Serve well-chilled. At 330ml it is the standard bottle size, practical for any occasion.
