Kubota Manju is the flagship expression of the Kubota range from Asahi Shuzo, a brewery founded in 1830 in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. Niigata is one of Japan’s most celebrated sake-producing regions, defined by cold winters, clean water from the Shinano River basin, and a tradition of producing sake that is dry, refined, and built for the table. Manju — meaning “ten thousand longevity” — sits at the top of the Kubota range and is one of Japan’s most respected premium sake labels. The rice is polished to 33% of its original size, removing almost two-thirds of each grain to reveal the starchy core that ferments into the characteristically elegant, complex flavour. Despite this level of refinement, Manju is not a delicate or particularly sweet sake — it is dry, structured, and layered, with a clean ginjo aroma, a deep and nuanced body, and a long, refined finish. Serve well-chilled as an aperitif or alongside fine Japanese cuisine — sashimi, sushi, and white-fleshed fish in particular. The 300ml bottle is well-suited to a single occasion or as a carefully considered gift.
